BOE tand ING is a project of CASA San Miguel’s Ambassadorship Program for the local youth who train weekly in Music and the Arts. Casa San Miguel, a community-based school in Barrio San Miguel, San Antonio, Zambales, that harnesses arts and culture as a medium for community development. Owned and managed by renowned violinist Alfonso “Coke” Bolipata, Casa San Miguel was first established in 1993 as a means of uplifting the spirits of the region, which was then just recovering from the devastation brought by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. This project obtains to nurture the mind of the young generation about the issues revolving around waste and its effects on sea life as well as the communities that rely on the ocean as part of their habitat. The structure was then “skinned” using nearby 2000 recycled soda bottle and mineral water. The sculpture was further developed by making it a light piece for nighttime viewing attained by suspending a row black light in the shark's belly that reveal the iconic spots for which it is known, as well as a rotating disco ball to give the sculpture a sense of motion. REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE, three great ways we can eliminate waste and protect our environment. A simple message that we must maintain a reverence for all life, and that we humans are part of the problem. If we all follow, it will drastically reduce the threat faced by hundreds of other creatures.
