by Jonas Reyes September 11, 2016 Olongapo City, Zambales — This city played host yesterday to the Material Recovery Program’s (MRP’s) Recyclable Regatta 2016 at the Driftwood Beach Resort with the aim of raising awareness on plastic pollution of the sea. Led by Mayor Rolen Paulino of this city, the event featured several boats made of recyclable materials as created by the different barangays and schools in the city “We want to instill in the residents’ consciousness that throwing garbage especially in the sea have adverse effects to the environment,” Paulino said. “I am thrilled to see these boats that are made of recyclable materials. It shows that the people behind these boats saved up the plastic bottles and garbage to create beautiful makeshift boats,” he added. The city has been aggressive in campaigning against trash. Paulino said that trash has been one of the factors that sunk the city in floodwater. A city ordinance has been implemented banning the use of plastic bags in supermarkets and groceries, forcing these establishments to use eco-friendly paper bags, cartons and reusable grocery bags. Paulino added that with the potential of plastic byproducts like pet bottles and old oil containers to float in water, it would be better if barangays saved up these bottles and use it to create canoes that will be used during emergency disaster response.
